winter sun

as the light caresses my face
i question whether i feel more at home
more at peace
with the biting cold sinking its teeth
into my skin

warmth paints the endless sky
with amber light above breathing willows
but i feel more myself
beneath the sunken blues and grays
with ice hanging from the roof
threatening to fall

winter sun doesn’t scorch the snow
it kisses you lightly
a quiet reminder it remains
yet never overwhelms

the cold allows the loneliness to
feel earned
and natural—
a mother’s gentle embrace
pushing your hair behind your ear
admiring your rose-colored cheeks
and glossy, bloodshot eyes

when the sun comes out again
you still won’t be here
and i’ll pray for the cold
that held us both
before
