mother

had i known the weight you bore
i would have grown lighter
forever the joyful child
with innocence as my guide
life painted in rose-tinted hues

my thoughts would remain my own
no burden for you to carry
nor sorrows for you to mend
a set of impenetrable armor
i should have worn every day

to spare you from my anguish
i'd have given my life
so maybe you could have begun to live
no longer tormented with the duties
forced upon you as a mother

yet it seems i'm to blame
for you were not ready
for a child to come into this world
yearning for nothing more
than your nurturing embrace

as you cast me to the wolves
my footing unsteady yet determined
you wish to become nothing
but a distant memory
as someone who only tried their best

enjoy the life you build
as i continue to forge my own way
your lessons that became
my consequences
forgotten by you, yet cherished by me
